So much has happened since you heard from us last!
The biggest news is that, thanks to some very special people, our Kickstarter Campaign has been successfully funded!! We now have our Operating Budget, and can actually afford to put this show on the stage.
If you haven't pledged yet and would still like to, please do! We are now pushing for a surge target of $8,000 to make sure this show is as amazing as we know it can be, get the word out there to as many people as possible, and to ensure that we can pay the artists a little something at the end of the run. You can have a look at our trailer, campaign and lots of awesome rewards here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/367454030/mauritius-by-theresa-rebeck
Rehearsals are going very well indeed, with our actors coming off-book this week. It's always terrifying putting the script down but they have all done an excellent job. We're starting to run scenes together and see the full show take shape - it's very exciting!
We've played Musical-Rehearsal-Spaces over the past couple of weeks, and give huge thanks to the wonderful folks who have allowed us to utilize their venues to scream at each other. You can see them in the photos above.
- The picture of Kitty and Andy facing off is in one of the studios at Cobbstar Studios. Cobbstar Studios is a fully equipped production facility located at Paddington Town Hall and has a number of spaces for hire including a sound stage Green Screen Studio, Rehearsal Spaces and Workshop/Meeting Rooms. Check them out here: https://cobbstarproductions.com/studios/
- The picture of Emma napping between scenes is at in the wonderful Function Room at Miss Peaches, upstairs at the arlborough Hotel in Newtown. The first time our director Richard walked into the room he said "I'm having my birthday here". It's a truly awesome space with a great vibe, great location and Soul Food on the menu. Check it out here: https://www.misspeaches.com.au/
- The photo of Peter and Emma "on stage" is in Waywards, the bar upstairs at the Bank Hotel in Newtown, our amazing Rehearsal Space Official Sponsor. They left the lights and red drapes up for us from the previous night's "Waywards Comedy", a weekly Wednesday night laugh-fest featuring local and international talent. This is a truly awesome venue and they have some great stuff happening over the next couple of months. Have a peek here: http://www.bankhotel.com.au/
We also had fun at the Philas Open Day on Saturday 17th June. We highly recommend you go to the next one on 21st October if you are a collector or thinking of becoming one. Two dealers were set up selling their wares, several clubs were represented, Philas had set out a marvelous exhibit of their Richard Bates Collection. Richard Bates was the contract designer for Papua New Guinea in the 1970's and his work is well worth a look.
Philas' next Stamp Auction will be held on 8th July at Philas House in Surry Hills. That's only a few days before we open the show! So if you'd like to gather some context for the play and get in the mood, you can find details at http://philas.org.au/
Final set design has now been decided and our Set Designer Rhys Nicholson will soon begin sourcing furniture and set dressings to bring the stage to life. We can't wait for you to see it!
In the musical department, Composer Ned McPhie is currently strumming up a little soundtrack for our rehearsal time-lapse video, which we will share with you all soon so you can have a peek behind-the-scenes and see how the team is working.
And that just about sums up our main news items for this week. It's been busy, it's been fun, it's been intense. All the things that go into making a great show.
Until next week, Amigos!
